January 10, 2018 --- We continue to work with the BMV to insure that Hoosier motorcyclists have access to quality rider education and that the Indiana Motorcycle Operator Safety and Education Fund is used efficiently and effectively. At this moment, we are not aware of any legislative changes related to this program.
SB19 - suggests some changes to the youth helmet law for off-highway vehicles that passed last year. The changes would make provisions for underage riders of ATVs and UTVs. ABATE does not currently have a strong position on this bill, but is encouraging further research so as to avoid unintended consequences.
ABATE of Indiana is working with the BlueRibbon Coalition and the American Motorcyclist Association in an effort to gain access for motorized recreation into the Hoosier National Forest (HNF). Motorized recreation was "temporarily" removed from the HNF in the 1970's and remains excluded to this date. The desire is to have a concurrent resolution from the Indiana General Assembly suggesting that the United States Forest Service consider once again allowing responsible use by off-road vehicles. We are currently seeking a champion for this effort.
