Motorcycles are provided for this class.
No permit is required to get your Indiana endorsement if you successfully complete the class.***

The Indiana Bureau of Motor Vehicles recognizes course completion for the endorsement waiver for one year.
Young riders are cautioned to schedule their course to coincide with obtaining their Indiana driver's license so as not to exceed one year from course completion.
Not all states will accept out-of-state course completion for endorsement. Check with your state's motor vehicle agency to confirm.

Students should provide the following gear:

1) Helmet: Properly fitted, DOT-approved 3/4 coverage or greater; half helmets are NOT allowed (loan helmets are available at the training range).

2) Eye protection
3) Long-sleeved shirt or jacket
4) Long pants: Made of heavy material, such as denim (blue jeans) - no holes.

5) Full-finger gloves
6) Sturdy over-the-ankle footwear
7) Rain gear may be desired, since classes are held rain or shine - No ponchos

Students should arrive at least 15 minutes before the class begins.
There are NO REFUNDS, registration is NOT TRANSFERABLE, and a $50 RESCHEDULING FEE will apply (current season only). Rescheduling must be done at least one week (7 days) before the start of class and is subject to class availability.
This class is on a pass-or-fail basis. ABATE of Indiana assumes no responsibility for any student's completion of these rider education courses. To complete the course, you must attend all sessions and pass a written and riding exam.
Students who successfully complete the class have one year to obtain their Indiana motorcycle endorsement; otherwise, their eligibility expires.

ABATE of Indiana is pleased to announce that a contract has been signed with the Indiana Bureau of Motor Vehicles (BMV) to participate in the Ride Safe Indiana Program. The BMV will recognize the Basic Rider Skills (BRS) course offered by ABATE, allowing students to obtain a motorcycle endorsement on their license. This curriculum has been reviewed by the National Association of State Motorcycle Safety Administrators (SMSA) and found to meet the Model National Standards for Entry-Level Motorcycle Rider Training as developed by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).

***The State of Indiana requires that you have an Indiana operator's license in order to obtain your motorcycle endorsement.

About the class

The Basic Rider Skills (BRS) class can take anywhere from 15 to 20 hours to complete depending on weather, overall class progression and other factors. The BRS consists of classroom and on-cycle training, and can be completed in one weekend or four to five weekdays.

The course is intended to help you acquire the basic knowledge and skills needed for safe and responsible motorcycle operation. The course will help you:

Learn the mental skills for safe motorcycling.

Understand the risks associated with motorcycling.
Identify and develop strategies to manage risk.
Understand how your decisions affect your ability to ride safely.

Gain the physical skills for safe motorcycling.

Develop the basic skills needed to ride in a straight line, shift, turn, and stop the motorcycle.
Improve basic cornering and braking skills.
Practice braking and swerving skills needed for emergency situations.

The goal is to help you be successful and safe. Ask lots of questions. Our ABATE of Indiana instructors will help you discover the answers. Concentrate on developing your skills and your strategies — the first steps to riding safely!
