Beware The E 15 Monster

ABATE of Indiana Announces the Launch of Biker Approved Gas

Bargersville, Indiana --- ABATE of Indiana is excited to announce the launch of Biker Approved Gas (BAG), an informal relationship between Hoosier motorcyclists and Hoosier fuel retailers that will improve consumer and retailer relations through user friendly marketing language and fuel product labeling.

The marketing of higher ethanol fuels (defined as fuel products blended with greater than 10% ethanol content), also called E-15, has become a major concern for the bikers of Indiana over the last few years. Not only is using fuel blends higher than E-10 in smaller displacement engines, like those powering motorcycles, prohibited by federal law, but these fuels have been demonstrated to damage components in the engines, culminating in the fact that some motorcycle manufacturers will immediately void all warranties if any amount of E-15 is used in their products.

These same small displacement engines are also found in personal watercraft, personal all terrain vehicles such as side-by-sides and snowmobiles, lawnmowers, chainsaws, and countless other examples of recreational and utility equipment.

ABATE believes that an educated consumer is the best way to avoid improper usage of high ethanol fuel and has begun cultivating grassroots relationships with fuel retailers across Indiana. Retailers who choose to participate in Biker Approved Gas will receive a logo sticker that denotes the establishment as a retailer of BAG, and inclusion in a BAG retailer list both online at www.abateonline.org/bag and in the monthly magazine the “Hoosier Motorcyclist”. Participating retailers will also label each fuel product at each pump clearly defining the ethanol content of each product.

“We believe this is the best time to launch an initiative like this”, says ABATE of Indiana’s Executive Director Jay Jackson. “Not providing motorcyclists the proper fuel to safely, efficiently, and legally operate their motorcycles is essentially a motorcycle ban.”  Mr. Jackson believes that BAG is one way that Indiana bikers can protect their freedom to ride, continuing “We’re going to encourage our members to patronize only BAG participating gas stations when it’s feasible in order to incentivize fuel retailers to keep selling clean gas.”
